Futuristic learning at Southampton City College
by Student News - Tuesday, 9 March 2010, 02:52 PM

SOUTHAMPTON City College has been awarded £20,000 to launch its own state-of-the-art learning method. The college bid for and won funding from a national government project, MoLeNET, after putting forward a proposal to use mobile technology to improve learning.

The money is being used to fund the Capture project, which sees more than 50 students across a number of vocational courses being given PDAS (Personal Digital Assistants) so they can submit evidence for their NVQs and Diplomas to an ePortfolio using mobile and wireless technology.

Gabby Bruen, Head of Faculty, Art and Design
by Student News - Tuesday, 9 March 2010, 01:43 PM

Following the very sad news this morning about the death of Gabby Bruen, the College has put in place special support arrangements for students who may have been affected and wish to talk through their feelings.

Z006 and Z007 have been put aside as quiet spaces for reflection and for groups of students to gather. The Student Adviser team, in particular Miranda Shoebridge or Amanda Bowl, are available to support individual students in the staff room in Z Block or via ext 7276.

Student Advisers will be able to refer you for further support to local bereavement services. In addition, the College counsellor, Gloria Howles, is available on Tuesday and Thursday morning this week. She will be offering additional support as it is required for individuals or groups, and we will let you know the details of this when we are able to.

A book of condolence has been set-up for students and staff to leave their messages. Please leave your messages at the following link:

Important EMA Communication
by Student News - Tuesday, 2 March 2010, 02:43 PM

Please read this important article if you receive EMA payments. You can use the "Reply" link at the bottom of the page to give the College your opinions (you will need to log in to reply to the article).

Many of you may have had some problems since the start of the year with the payment of your EMA or ALG – can I start by apologising for those? I am writing to let you know of some changes we are going to make with effect from Monday 22 February, which will help us to give you a better service, and also mean that we are paying EMA in a more business-like way, to prepare you well for the world of work.
